Learning Support Department
The Learning Support (LS) department is made up Support Assistants who provide in class support and small group lessons as well as some 1:1 pullout sessions as required. A limited number of Individual Support Assistants (ISAs) are utilized to support individual students at an additional cost to parents. A key function of Learning Support is the assessment and evaluation of students referred for academic or social difficulties. Learning Support staff work collaboratively with teachers and parents to plan and implement Individual Educational Plans (IEPs). IES Learning Support staff advocate for students across all sections of the school to promote positive learning environments.
We realize that for a variety of reasons some students require support in the technical aspects of English language for a limited amount of time. We therefore provide help in a variety of ways. All teachers have under-gone EAL in the Mainstream courses and are aware of the challenges that second language English speakers have. Teaching strategies are adapted to suit these students—though ensuring that the progress of first language speakers is not compromised. Some students require individual help, and this is offered through the services of Learning Support Assistants who help students either in the classroom or through withdrawal.
